CASE STUDY

Englewood is in the iron grip of teenage and adult gang members who ae inflictin havoc on a once stable community over which gang(s) fight over control of the lucrative cocain trade.

Once stately graystones and neat brick bungalows fall into desirepair mainly because homeowners and landlords have to endure boarded up abandon buildings and garbage strewn vacant lots that lessen their property value.

Gangs have made the streets a battlegound.  Children are not safe at home, in school or playing in front of their houses.  Senieor citizens who cash their social secrutiy checks at the local currency exchange are easy prey for robbers.

Englewood is just one of the low income communities where unemployment is skyrocketing.

  • 55 percent of working people ages 16-63 are out of work.

  • 26,951 males 16 years and older, but only 6,752 have jobs.

  • 15,492 females 16 years and older, but only 6,752 have jobs

  • Employment rate is nearly three times that of the City of Chicago

  • Average income is under $10,000

  • Economic base for unemployed teenagers and adults have become drugs, namely cocain; giving rise to gange activity.

  • Commercial areas are likening to a ghost town.

  • Minority enterpreneruship is less than 5 percent.
